Geography New Graduate Student Technical Check List

Basic: GatorOne ID and Card

  1. You should have already had an UF ID number after registration.
  2. If you have not received a UF ID card, go to UF ID Card service to get it at UF Bookstore & Welcome Center, Room G071 (location map or another map).

Account:

  1. Gatorlink account: Go to GatorLink website to get your Gatorlink account at http://www.gatorlink.ufl.edu/. It will only take couple minutes.
  2. Your UF email: You will create your UF email account yourusername@ufl.edu at Gatorlink website, or you can get it from http://my.ufl.edu website after you create your gatorlink account. It will only take couple minutes.
  3. ClasNet account: You need to get your ClasNet account by sending an email to help@geog.ufl.edu with these information: your full name, your UFID, your perferred user name (length <=8) and your current email address. You will get your ClasNet account via email within 1 day, but usually it is quicker. After you get it, you can check this CLASNET new user web page and CLASNET user account.
  4. Your @geog.ufl.edu email. Every graduate student can get a yourclasnetusername@geog.ufl.edu email. However it is not recommended you use this email address because ClasNet email only supports IMAP protocol. Since most of graduate students share computers in labs, it will be VERY inconvenient for you to setup your account information everytime you check email. However you can keep this email address. It is strongly recommended that you forward your messages to your UF email account or other email account. You can request the email forward from http://www.clasnet.ufl.edu/accounts/forward.shtml.

Lab access:

You can go to Geography department main office with your Gator One card to request lab access. You can access the labs with your Gator One card at anytime. Lab door MUST be closed between 5pm and 8am for your own and lab security. You are advised not to stay at lab over night for security concern.  You can use any computers in the three labs. Graduate lab has 5 top line new computers which will give you the best performance.

Printing:

If you are a TA/RA, you can receive $30.00 credit for printing in your ClasNet account. Blace/white printing is 3 cents per page while color printing is 14 cents per page. If you need more printing credit, writing a check payalbe to Geography Department and your account will be refilled. For printers, please check Printers and Printing.

Storage Space:

You will have a folder (folder name will be your ClasNet username) in G: drive. The G: drive is shared by all Geography students, staff and faculty, but your own personal folder in G: drive is exclusively accessed by you. You also have H:, I: and S: drive. The same as G:, H: drive is exclusively accessed by you. The I: drive will be your Internet drive (your web page). You and public can access your I: drive as http://www.clas.ufl.edu/users/yourclasnetusername. S: drive is a shared drive for all graduate students, staff and faculty in Geography department. All of the G:, H:, I: and S: drive has limited space and it has usually been in full in every semester. You should use department computers and school resources for academic purpose only. Computer administrators have full accesses to all of your drives. Please check this web page for directory structure.

Use your own computer in the department

If you want to use your own labtop or desktop in the department, you must bring it to the main office. Your computer MAC address must be recorded. After the approvment from ClasNet, you can use your personal computer in the department. If you want to access your networ drives (G, H, I, S) from your own computer, a Novel Network Client Software must be installed. Download (19M) the zip file first, then expand it to a temporary folder, then run the "491 sp2_setup.bat" file to install Novel Client.
